Friends of Frugality – ACEVS
Liulang Pavilion left a comment in this article about eating rice.

Note

A 50KG bag of rice in my home is finished in less than a month. Just the two of us eat it, and we occasionally have other snacks. It's really not possible to be frugal just by wanting to be frugal, because you can't really be frugal!

Rice Consumption Calculation#

I also calculated it, but I didn't keep track clearly. I will continue to calculate later.

Note

You need to control your blood sugar. 1.666kg of rice per day means 555g of rice per meal for three meals. It's still dry. Generally, we don't eat rice in the morning.
In my home, a meal of mixed grains is at most 250g (I need to measure this carefully, I forgot). Dry when raw. For two people.

Ancient and Modern Diets#

Ancient Diet#

In ancient times, being able to have enough food was already good. At most, there were two meals a day. If we go back thousands of years, humans probably ate whatever they found, and if there was nothing, they would go hungry, which was likely quite common. Because even now, the scientifically unproven three meals a day still have quite long intervals.

Modern Diet#

Three meals a day are a product of the industrial age, and the eight-hour work system is probably the same. Now that machines are advanced, most people are no longer strictly workers; mental laborers seem to consume more. In fact, the brain consumes 20-30% of the body's energy, and with the popularization of AI, this proportion is likely to decrease further.

Energy Consumption and Work#

Physical Labor#

Moving companies, etc., which do not rely on exoskeletons, must engage in high-energy-consuming physical activities.

Mental Labor#

Driving is a good way to consume brain energy; the brain weighs about 2% of the body. The brain consumes 40% more energy while driving than usual, which is why people often feel tired after driving, especially for long periods.

Cost-Effectiveness of Driving#

Cost of Driving#

In my opinion, driving is relatively low in cost-effectiveness; it's better to take a taxi when you need a car. Generally, you won't spend more than ten thousand a year. For long distances, you can carpool, which costs about 20 for around 30 kilometers, and a daily round trip is about 40 yuan (a friend did this before). Based on normal commuting time, about 250 days a year, it would cost around ten thousand.

Disadvantages of Driving#

The downside is that various accidents may be more frequent. With your own car, it's generally just car-related accidents (mainly breakdowns and traffic accidents). With more people, there are also human-related accidents (mainly tardiness, emergencies, and leave).

Human Brain and Technology#

Simulation of the Human Brain#

The human brain is like a CPU, memory, and hard drive, almost integrated. This is also the direction of Apple's motherboard design, seemingly simulating the human brain to improve efficiency.

Mixed Grain Rice and Health#

Choice of Mixed Grain Rice#

Back to mixed grain rice, I used to like various types of rice. I saw a post on what is worth buying, where a rib rice shop owner tested a lot of rice. His consumption was fast, and he got data quickly. In the end, he chose Yanhe Long Grain Fragrant Rice for its high cost-effectiveness, mainly because of its taste and price, which can ensure quality while making more profit. If he switched to Thai fragrant rice, he might earn less. So for a while, I only bought Yanhe Long Grain Fragrant Rice until I watched a few short videos.

Diabetes and Diet#

They are all carriers of diabetes, in their 30s and 60s, serious and disciplined, enjoying testing and sharing. Sugar People Help, Sugar Person Jie, both names sound fierce. Testing content: after eating a certain amount of food, measure blood sugar at half an hour, one hour, and two hours. Later, there was dynamic silicon-based testing, showing real-time blood sugar changes over several hours clearly. I watched videos of most of the foods I commonly eat and made a table to record them. I rarely used the table later. Many foods that seem like coarse grains have a high glycemic index, such as corn, whole grain bread, steamed buns, biscuits, and noodles. They both consider themselves disciplined and control well, especially Sugar Person Jie.

Recipe for Mixed Grain Rice#

I also learned about mixed grain rice from them, looking at their recipe (which also changes): oat rice, buckwheat rice, black rice, brown rice. Black rice and brown rice are too sticky; sticky and mushy types are glycemic boosters, so I gave them up. The same goes for glutinous rice and fruit corn. Meat has the downside of fat issues. Fish is good in every way except for bones and consumption time. Crustaceans like crabs, shrimp, and scorpions are just about uric acid.
Currently, I use oat rice (the kind that can't be flattened) + any rice, each half.
Pairing oat rice with any rice seems to lower the taste, so any rice will do.

Steaming Rice in a Pressure Cooker#

Now, steaming rice in a pressure cooker, one measuring cup, about 150g of mixed grain rice, add about 250g of water. After the mixed grain rice is cooked, it weighs about 300g, which is the maximum I can eat in one meal. Generally, I have one meal at noon. In the evening, it's vermicelli, rice noodles, and bamboo noodles + a lot of vegetables. The folic acid in vegetables may lead to issues like stones.
Now, any white rice we eat at home is an improvement in life for the kids.
However, before the holidays, the kids eat at school.
